‘A’ and ‘Anak Metropolitan’
Aced
the Ratings Chart

Two MediaCorp TV12 Suria’s programmes ‘A’ and ‘Anak Metropolitan’ both aced the ‘Top Programmes of the Week in Suria’ list in their debut episodes.

‘A’, is a 1-hour variety-cum-talk show hosted by the pop diva Anita Sarawak. This 9-episode series which is currently being telecast every Tuesday at 9:30 pm on Suria has consistently rated very well.

It was the top rated programme for two consecutive weeks since its debut. It rated 4.1% (P4+) or 155,000 viewers on its debut episode on Tues 19 Mar 02. The following week, it rated 5.4% (P4+) or 207,000 viewers.

This week, though it rated just as high at 5.4% (P4+) or 207,000 viewers, its top spot was taken over by the new drama series Anak Metropolitan.

Each episode of ‘A’ carries a unique theme that is based on a specific musical period and genre. In the song and dance segment, Anita will sing with her guest artistes such as Malaysian rappers, ‘Too Phat’, Indonesian crooner Tommy J. Pisa as well as a host of Singaporean artistes such Nuradee, Rudy Djoharnaen and finalists from SURIA’s talent show ‘Anugerah’.

In the game segment, the studio audience is invited to take part in the game ‘Beat the Clock’. Through this segment, the participants will attempt to perform the challenges they faced, such as putting on the make-up on their female partners within a given time frame, etc.

In the segment ‘King of Prop’, Anita with the aid of our local comedians will attempt to devise as many spontaneous uses for the props as possible within a 1-minute deadline.

Anita shows her versatility as she acts, sings and even performs comic skits with her guests artistes and studio audience.

The other programme that has rated very well is ‘Anak Metropolitan’, a 1-hour drama series that portrays the social and personal problems commonly faced by teenagers. It also explores how upbringing, peer group and parents play important roles in shaping the character of their children and the choices they will take.

The 7-episode series, which boasts a multi-racial cast, made its debut on Wednesday, 3 April 2002 at 9:30 pm with a strong rating of 6.1% (P4+) or 233,000 viewers.

The issues addressed in the drama are very real and current and the multi-racial cast adds to the authenticity of the situation. This allows both the older and younger viewers to easily relate to the situation. The anti-crime messages are subtly woven into the programme so that it is not preachy thus making it readily acceptable by the viewers.

Though many of the younger actors are new, they are able to provide a convincing portrayal of teenage gangsters. Leading the teenage gangster team are Nadia Fazlini and Suzairhe Sumarie.

Nadia was the winner of Suria’s talent search competition, Anugerah 1999, and was nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ category in Suria’s Pesta Perdana 5. Suzairhe is an accomplished actor and was nominated for the ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Supporting Actor’ categories in Pesta Perdana 5.

The series also features popular singer Rahimah Rahim, veteran actor JA Halim, as well as Margaret Chan, who is making her acting debut in Suria.

The series is produced by the same team from EagleVision (MediaCorp Studios) that produced Selagi Ada Kasih : Jeritan Sepi, the highest rated drama in Suria last year.
